Shabbat Shalom from Pembroke!

Don’t Race to the Finish

Camp Pembroke isn’t just about where you end up—it’s about who you become along the way. From your first summer in Bunk 1A to your final days on the Hill or in 9AB, the process of camp changes you. Every summer has a different lesson: take your time, set your pace, let others take the lead when you need a moment, ask for help, HYDRATE, help those who need you along the way and push through the hard moments, fuel your body and your mind, the list goes on and on, the learning moments are truly never-ending.

The Starting Line Nerves

Three weeks ago we all put on our staff shirts, opened the gates and welcomed 250 campers to their summer home. Whether it is your first summer at Pembroke or your fifth, the beginning is always a rush. New faces. Unpacked bags. Butterflies in your stomach. It’s like standing at the starting line, unsure of what’s ahead but full of hope. There’s the excitement of reuniting with old friends, the anxiety of meeting new bunkmates and counselors, and the thrill of unknown adventures waiting around every corner.

Even the mundane moments have a special kind of magic. The straightaways that remind you of the most simple pleasures of camp. The routine, the consistency of friends, the structure of a daily schedule, these rituals remind us of that slow and steady wins the race.

The Hard Moments That Shape You

No one runs a marathon without hills, and no one goes through a summer without challenges.

Maybe it’s the first time you’ve been away from home for so long. Maybe it’s learning to deal with conflict in your bunk. Maybe it’s trying something new—singing in front of the whole camp, passing a swim test, or pushing through homesickness. These moments are your uphill climbs. They burn. They test you. But they’re also where you grow the most.

At Camp Pembroke, the hard moments are never faced alone. There’s always a counselor with a knowing smile, a bunkmate offering encouragement, or a friend who walks beside you even when they could be sprinting ahead.

The Pure Joy

Then there are the stretches of pure joy—the College Night cheers, the talent show laughter, late-night talks under the stars, and that unmistakable feeling of belonging. These are the downhills, where your feet seem to fly, your heart feels full, and the world feels just right.

It’s the cheers after a successful Seussical performance, the team spirit during Track Meet, or the moment you finally master something you thought you couldn’t do. These moments carry you, they remind you of why you’re here and why you chose this path.

Your Running Pack

Every runner knows that who you run with matters. At Camp Pembroke, the people are your pack. From counselors to lifelong friends, everyone is running their own version of the marathon—and somehow, you’re still all in it together.

You celebrate each other’s wins, carry each other through tough days, and create memories that last well beyond the summer sun. Years later, it won’t be the schedule or the exact activities you remember—it’ll be the people who ran beside you.

The Finish Line: Bittersweet and Beautiful

The last days of camp feel a lot like crossing a finish line. There’s pride, there’s sadness and there’s the sweet ache of something deeply meaningful coming to an end.

You look back and realize that every moment – the easy and the hard, the loud and the quiet, the silly and the serious – they mattered. You are stronger, more confident, more yourself than when you began.

And just like a marathon, it isn’t just about finishing. It’s about every mile in between.

The Journey Is the Reward

Camp Pembroke isn’t just a summer. It’s a journey. A transformative, emotional, exhilarating experience that changes you in ways you didn’t even expect. From ages seven to 70, camp reminds you that the real magic is in showing up every day, facing what comes, leaning on your people, and celebrating every step of the way.

Because whether it’s on a trail or a camp trail, it’s not just about crossing the finish line—it’s about becoming who you are on the way there.

And very different than a marathon, when all you want is to be standing at the finish line, we wish camp could last FOREVER.
