Our Israeli family’s love story with the “Cohen Camps Family”

It all began when my eldest daughter, now a 20-year-old soldier, was about to enter 9th grade and asked to fly with her best friend to a camp in the United States.
I had so many questions: How could I, who barely let her travel alone by train to Tel Aviv, send her by herself to the U.S.? Who are these people? Who will drive her from the airport and back? Who will take care of her? What will she eat? How will I fit all this gear into her suitcase? I had so many concerns, questions, and doubts.
In Tel Aviv, I met the then-director of Camp Pembroke and her deputy (who now manages the camp). They were two wonderful women who patiently and warmly answered all my questions and gradually eased my concerns. It turns out that Cohen Camps operates three camps near Boston, one of which is exclusively for girls (hooray!). That was one worry out of the way. They explained that they were in Israel to interview Israeli counselors sponsored by the Jewish Agency to join the summer camp staff. They shared details about the camp’s daily routine.
Our experience with all three camps and their many staff members has been wonderful. I’m grateful for the warm treatment we received from everyone we interacted with over the years as our children became part of the Cohen Camps family.
Where do they sleep? The camp is located in a pastoral setting, surrounded by trees and near a lake. The camp is divided into cabins called “bunks,” each named with an Israeli theme, where groups of girls of a similar age sleep. Each girl has a bed and a personal space for their belongings, with shared showers and toilets. Each bunk has responsible counselors who are always with the girls, both during daily activities and at night.
What do they eat? Meals are held in a communal dining hall, where campers have all three meals a day. The camp accommodates food sensitivities and dietary needs. I was also pleased to learn there’s a kitchen rotation for serving and helping the kitchen staff.
What do they do during the day? There is a wide variety of activities. Before arriving, children choose their preferred activities and stay busy all day! There are also water sports activities on the lake, all supervised by a skilled team of counselors, many of whom are former campers, young Israelis from the Jewish Agency program, and carefully selected counselors from around the world.
How do I contact my child? Phones are not allowed at camp, and the kids enjoy two months free of phones (yes, it’s possible, and even easy). Local campers receive and send letters to and from their parents. For Israeli campers, who might feel more sensitive, their phones are stored in the camp office, and a video call with home is allowed every Friday evening. Toward the end of camp, I admit the counselor had to convince my daughter to attend the scheduled call.
Do the kids connect with campers who have known each other for years? Campers are excited to welcome the kids from Israel and shower them with attention. From experience, long-term friendships are formed.
On a side note, I must mention that this camp is like one big family. Even the parents’ WhatsApp groups embrace and support the Israeli families. The camp is Zionist and pro-Israel, fostering a strong connection to Israel and Jewish identity (not in a religious sense), which is truly heartwarming.
How will she physically get to camp? Flights offer the option of an accompanying flight attendant. A camp representative will wait at the airport, whose details will be shared in advance, even if the flight lands at 4 AM. They will notify parents as soon as they pick up the child and transport them to camp, and the same process applies for the return trip. Parents are responsible for arranging the flight details and accompanying service.
The connection with the camp management is smooth and accessible from the start of the process and throughout the camp stay. You can always contact the counselors or camp management if needed.
How do you register? Cohen Camps operates three camps: one exclusively for girls and two co-ed camps, with separate activities and sleeping arrangements for boys and girls.
Each camp has a website where you can register, create an account, and find all the necessary forms, costs, equipment lists, etc. The website also offers an app to track daily photo uploads and even receive notifications when photos of your child are uploaded.
What about the required equipment? For international travelers, the camp provides blankets, towels, and sheets, so campers only need to bring personal items (clothing, swimwear, footwear, toiletries, etc.).
After that meeting, I was convinced, and Lihi registered for Camp Pembroke.
Since then, as summer camp activities resumed post-COVID, my son Roee joined Camp Tel-Noar, and later, Iftach enrolled in Camp Tevya.
Our experience with all three camps and their many staff members has been wonderful. I’m grateful for the warm treatment we received from everyone we interacted with over the years as our children became part of the Cohen Camps family.
Each camp takes pride in its unique identity. Upon returning home, our kids have lively Friday dinner debates about which camp is the best, comparing versions of Shabbat songs and various camp traditions (Shabbat evening ceremonies, morning rituals, color wars competitions, and more).
The kids made great friends, stayed in touch throughout the year, hosted their friends at home, and some even came to visit and stay with us when traveling to Israel.
Last summer, we were thrilled that, for the first time, all three of our children were at camp simultaneously. Toward the end of the summer, we visited them:
- Lihi was a counselor at Camp Pembroke through the Jewish Agency program.
- Roee was a young counselor at Camp Tel Noar.
- Iftach was a camper at Camp Tevya.
We finally understood the pride and joy of spending a month or two in such a pastoral setting, surrounded by friends and packed with fun activities.
I am truly grateful for this opportunity to be part of this amazing community.
הכל התחיל כאשר הבת הבכורה שלי, שהיום חיילת בת 20, עלתה לכיתה ט’ ובקשה לטוס יחד עם חברתה הטובה לקמפ בארה”ב.
היו לי כל כך הרבה שאלות:
איך אני, שבקושי אפשרת לה ליסוע ברכבת לתל אביב אשלח אותה לבד לארה”ב, מי האנשים האלו? מי יסיע אותה משדה התעופה ובחזרה? מי ידאג לה? מה היא תאכל? איך אכניס למזוודה את כל רשימת הציוד הזו? ועוד מלא חששות, תהיות ושאלות…
בתל אביב פגשתי את מי שהייתה אז מנהלת קמפ פמברוק והסגנית שלה (שהיום הי זו שמנהלת את הקמפ) שתי נשים מקסימות שענו לכל השאלות שלי בלבביות ובסבלנות. ולאט, לאט הסירו את כל החששות. מסתבר שלכהן קמפ יש שלושה קמפים הפזורים בסמוך לבוסטון, וקמפ אחד מבין השלושה הוא קמפ לבנות בלבד (הידד !) כבר הוסר חשש אחד, הן הסבירו לי שהן הגיעו לראיין מדריכים ישראלים מטעם הסוכנות היהודית שיהוו חלק מצוות המדריכים בקיץ, הן סיפרו לי על שגרת היום יום במחנה.
כך שלמעשה ההיכרות שלנו עם שלוש המחנות, ועם בעלי תפקידים רבים, אני חייבת לציין לטובה את היחס החם שקיבלנו בכל אחד מהמחנות, מכל גורם אתו היינו בקשר במהלך השנים בהן הילדים הפכו לחלק ממשפחת כהן קמפ.
היכן ישנים – המחנה ממוקם במקום פסטורלי, בין עצים ולמרגלות אגם. המחנה מחולק למבנים הנקראים בנקים, כאשר לכל בנק יש שם ישראלי ובו ישנות קבוצת בנות משכבת גיל מסוימת. לכל אחת יש מיטה ופינה להניח את הדברים, מקלחת ושירותים משותפים ולכל בנק יש מדריכות אחראיות שנמצאות עם הבנות כל הזמן, בזמן הפעילות במשך היום ובלילה בזמן השינה.
מה אוכלים- יש חדר אוכל משותף ובו החניכים אוכלים את כל 3 הארוחות, המחנה דואג גם לרגישויות באוכל ובנוסף לשמחתי הבנתי שישנה תורנות מטבח הכוללת הגשה וסיוע לצוות המטבח.
מה עושים במשך היום- יש מגוון רחב של פעילויות, לפני ההגעה למחנה הילדים בוחרים סוגי את פעילויות המועדפים עליהם והם עסוקים ממש כל היום! ישנן גם פעילויות של ספורט ימי באגם והכל תחת השגחה של צוות מדריכים מיומן שחלקו חניכים לשעבר בקמפ, חלקו ישראלים צעירים המגיעים דרך הסכנות היהודית ובנוסף מדריכים צעירים מכל העולם הנבחרים בקפידה על ידי הנהלת המחנה.
איך אתקשר עם הבת שלי- למחנה אין אפשרות להגיע עם טלפונים סלולריים, הילדים נהנים מחודשיים נטולי טלפונים (וואו, מסתבר שזה אפשרי, ואפילו קל) החניכים המקומיים מקבלים מכתבים מההורים ושולחים בחזרה. מאחר והמחנה מודע לרגישות של החניכים המגיעים מישראל, הטלפון הנייד יאוחסן במשרד ההנהלה ותתאפשר שיחת וידאו מידי ערב שישי עם הבית (מודה שלקראת סוף המחנה המדריכה היתה צריכה לשכנע את הבת שלי להגיע בזמן לשיחה).
מניסיון, האם הילדים מתחברים לילדי המחנה להם היכרות ארוכת שנים- ילדי הקמפ מתרגשים לקראת הילדים שמגיעים מהארץ ומחבקים ועוטפים אותם בתשומת לב. מניסיון, נרקמות היכרויות לטווח ארוך.
במאמר מוסגר אציין כי מדובר במשפחה אחת גדולה, גם קבוצות הווטסאפ של ההורים “מחבקות” את המשפחות הישראליות. המחנה הוא מחנה ציוני פרו ישראלי והחיבור לארץ ישראל ולזהות היהודית (לא במשמעות הדתית) הוא חזק ומחמם את הלב.
איך היא תגיע פיזית למחנה- בכל טיסה יש שירות של דייל מלווה, בשדה התעופה ימתין מישהו מהמחנה, אשר פרטיו יהיו ידועים מראש, בשדה התעופה (גם אם המטוס נוחת ב- 4 לפנות בוקר) והוא יעדכן מייד כשיאסוף את הילד ויסיע אותו למחנה, כך גם בחזור. על ההורים כמובן לסדר את פרטי הטיסה ואת שירות הליווי בטיסה.
הקשר עם הנהלת הקמפ הוא נוח וזמין מתחילת ההליך ולאורך השהות במחנה, בכל שלב ניתן לפנות למדריכים או אם נדרש, להנהלת המחנה.
איך נרשמים- לכהן קמפ ישנם שלושה מחנות, מחנה אחד הוא לבנות בלבד והשניים הנוספים מעורבים בנים ובנות כאשר הבנקים והפעילויות הם בחלוקה לבנים לחוד ובנות לחוד.
כל מחנה מתנהל באתר אינטרנט וניתן לבצע את ההרשמה באמצעות האתר, לפתוח חשבון ובו יופיעו כל המסמכים שצריך למלא, עלויות, רשימות ציוד וכד’
באתר ישנה אפשרות (גם באמצעות אפליקציה) לעקוב אחרי תמונות יומיות שמועלות לאתר ואף להוסיף את תמונת הילד ולקבל התראה כאשר עולות תמונות נוספות של ילדך.
לגבי הציוד הנדרש- לנוסעים בינלאומיים הקמפ ידאג לשמיכות, מגבות ומצעים על כן על החניך לדאוג לציוד האישי בלבד (בגדים/ בגד ים / /הנעלה/ כלי רחצה ועוד).
אחרי הפגישה השתכנעתי וליהי נרשמה לקמפ פמברוק…
מאז וברגע שחזרה הפעילות במחנות הקיץ לאחר הקורונה נרשם רועי, אח נוסף, למחנה תל-נוער, ולאחריו נרשם יפתח לקמפ טביה.
כך שלמעשה ההיכרות שלנו עם שלוש המחנות, ועם בעלי תפקידים רבים, אני חייבת לציין לטובה את היחס החם שקיבלנו בכל אחד מהמחנות, מכל גורם אתו היינו בקשר במהלך השנים בהן הילדים הפכו לחלק ממשפחת כהן קמפ.
לכל מחנה ממש גאוות יחידה! עם חזרתם לארץ , בשולחן שישי מתנהל ויכוח סוער איזה מחנה הכי טוב ומשווים גרסאות של שירי שבת וטקסים שונים שעורכים במחנה (טקס ערב שבת, טקס בוקר, איך התנהלה תחרות הצבעים ומי ניצח ועוד’).
הילדים צברו חברים טובים איתם הם בקשר במהלך השנה, מתארחים בבתי חבריהם וחלקם אף הגיעו לבקר ולישון אצלנו כשהגיעו לביקור בארץ.
בקיץ האחרון שמחנו שבפעם הראשונה יצא שלושת ילדיינו היו בקמפ ולקראת סוף הקיץ נסענו לבקר אותם:

יפתח- חניך בקמפ טביה.
הבנו את גאוות היחידה, את הכייף הגדול לבלות חודש/חודשיים במקום כל כך פסטורלי עטופים בחברים ועמוסים בפעילויות חווייתיות.
