Camp Pembroke | The Ultimate Camp Sleepover

Dear Camp Pembroke,

sleepover

There are some moments at camp that you could never plan, no matter how carefully you build a schedule, and prepare a calendar. Last night was one of those moments and it very quickly turned from a chaotic disruption to a beautiful memory.

As the heat settled over camp, we made the decision to turn what could have been an uncomfortable night into something unforgettable: one giant Pembroke sleepover.

Within minutes, the entire camp sprang into action. Mattresses were hoisted over shoulders. Pillows were hugged tight. Blankets were folded into impossible bundles. Lovies, favorite stuffed animals, and the treasures that make a bunk feel like home all made the journey, too.

What initially felt like chaos became something remarkably beautiful. Older campers instinctively reached for extra mattresses. Younger campers eagerly carried what they could, determined to help. Counselors organized moving crews while laughing alongside their campers. Friends checked to make sure no one was left behind. Head counselors floated from group to group, answering questions and celebrating every small victory.

No one asked, “Is this my job?”. They simply asked, “How can I help?”

For an hour or so, camp looked a little different. There were certainly some hard moments,  the unexpected and different can always be hard but that didn’t stop the Pembroke family from coming together. The pathways were lined with campers carrying pieces of home from one building to another. There were giggles around every corner, dramatic stories about the “long trek” with a mattress, and countless declarations that this would be “the best sleepover ever.”

It was hard work. It was hot. It required flexibility from everyone. And somehow, because this is Pembroke, it was also fun. What struck us most wasn’t where everyone ended up sleeping. It was how naturally our community came together.

Camp has always been about so much more than cabins and schedules. It’s about learning that when something unexpected happens, we don’t face it alone. We adjust together, we problem-solve together, we laugh together, we carry one another, sometimes emotionally, and sometimes quite literally by helping someone move their mattress across camp.

These are the moments that quietly shape our campers. They learn resilience not because someone gives a lesson on resilience, but because they live it. They learn kindness because they watch someone stop to carry a younger camper’s pillow. They learn leadership because they see older campers setting the tone without ever being asked. They learn that community isn’t just a word we talk about at Shabbat or sing about after meals.

Community is what happens when 250 campers and a dedicated staff decide that everyone is going to have a safe, comfortable night, and everyone pitches in to make it happen.

This morning, camp woke up a little tired, but a little less sweaty, and full of stories and core memories. Stories about who slept next to whom. Stories about hauling mattresses across camp. Stories that will almost certainly grow a little bigger each time they’re told. Years from now, it’s unlikely anyone will remember exactly how hot it was, but we know they’ll remember the night the whole camp had one giant sleepover.

Because sometimes the very best camp memories aren’t the ones that go according to plan. That night we were reminder that wherever we are, whether in our own bunk or sleeping somewhere entirely unexpected, as long as we’re together, we’re home.

The morning brought one final moment that was the ultimate reminder of what camp, and our big night, are really all about. We had eight, super eager, super thoughtful young campers join us in the Dining Hall early to get the space set up for breakfast. They delivered juices to each table, placed salts and peppers, and plates and napkins as we awaited the arrival of the rest of camp. One of the campers dropped a big container of fruit loops, looked down at the rainbow spread all over the floor in front of her, looked up at me, shrugged her shoulders and said “that’s the most beautiful mess I’ve ever made”.

And that’s exactly what camp is, the most beautiful mess. How lucky are we to live amongst this crazy, caring chaos, all summer long?

With gratitude for this extraordinary community,

Love,

Amy & Becca
